MTC Week 2, 26 June 2013

Hi Mom!!!

Thanks so much for the package!  It was awesome to get!  All the notes on it made me smile a lot.  And the stuff inside was pretty good too!  I ate most of the Peachyo's at the devotional we had on Tuesday.  It was Janice Kapp Perry and it was way good.  Her husband talked a little too.  She told us his first line to her was "Your lips look like they're meant for more than playing the clarinet"  then he walked up to the podium and kissed her and then stuck his fist up in the air.  It got a standing ovation from most of the Elders, haha you don't see that kind of thing a lot.

We got to go to the temple today, which is good because the Provo temple closes on Saturday for 6 weeks, so up until we leave.  We did initiatories today and it was a great experience.  The food in the temple cafeteria is also way better than the MTC food.  I'm sad I missed out on that fun camping trip!  It sounds like so much fun!  We're having fun here too.  We've got a glow in the dark basketball hoop that we play with all the time, I don't hold any records but its still fun haha.  Yesterday for P-day I went to the weight room with a couple guys and had a good workout.  I'm at 173ish now..I'm trying to not gain weight here like almost everyone does.  But I guess once we're in Thailand we'll be eating rice and fruit, biking, and getting sick once a month so the report is that everyone loses weight.

We're learning so much!  we have two teachers now, our first "investigator" is now Brother Phan and I love his class.  Even when we learn the language he teaches so much with the spirit.

So I guess they sell SD card readers here!  They're like $10 so if you haven't already gotten one I can just get one here or you can send one!  Also could you send my soccer flats?  The red and black ones?  Thanks! My typing is pretty sloppy, but I'm just trying to get as much out as I can in an hour!  I Love you so much mom!  Keep sending the DearElders!  They make my day!
Love Josh

Dear Dad,

I hope the Gulkana trip isn't as miserable for you this year as it has been some years!  I hear its way warm there this year! Hopefully that will be true up on the river.  Maybe you'll see a bear this time. I always felt like we should have and then we never did.  That owl we saw was pretty cool though!  There's not a whole lot to see from the MTC, but the other day I did watch a couple robins chase off a squirrel for like 5 minutes, it was pretty funny haha.  The mountains here are cool!  When you can see them that it, the MTC feels pretty closed in, like you can't see the outside world.  The older Thai's leave on monday!  It's gotten me even more excited to go!  Thanks for all the letters!  I love hearing about everything that happens there!  I love and miss you!
Love Josh

MTC Week 1, 19 June 2013

Hi Mom!!!

I've been getting all your dear elder letters!  I love getting them and getting to hear about everything that's happening with our family.  It's crazy how hot it is there!!  I'm still not used to the heat, it's a pain wearing a dark suit when its 90 degrees outside.  Wednesdays are our P-days, so I'll be able to check emails then!  I've gotten a few letters too!  I got one from Grandma Mortensen and one from the Oldhams along with some candy.  If you see them be sure to tell them thank you for me.  As of now I have 18 minutes and 43 seconds left of email time.  I'm trying to type as fast as I can!

The MTC is awesome, we just went to the temple this morning and it was such a calming experience.  Sundays are good days, we have regular church meetings throughout the day and a few others.  Then at the end of the day its movie night!!  We watched the Testaments this week, that movie about the people in the Americas.  It's a way good movie, probably one of the best we'll get to watch haha.  Then Monday is great, we have a period of time that's called "Personal Workout Time" where we don't get to use the gym facilities but there's a pull up bar in the residence and you can pretty much do whatever you want.  I played some wall ball and just hung out with the other missionaries.  Oh actually me and some guys from my district set the record for our zone relay of 100 pull ups, I think it was around 3 minutes.  Tuesdays aren't bad either, but we do have to teach our "investigator" first thing in the morning, which can be stressful, but the language is coming really fast.  We started with a romanized version of Thai that uses recognizable letters, we're just learning how to use the Thai Script that looks so crazy.  You know Ian's friend that was going to Thailand?  He's in my district!  Elder Beatty is way good with the language.

The MTC is pretty demanding but it's also really rewarding, you grow so much spiritually here.  I'm excited to hear about the Gulkana trip!  I always thought it was a fun one.  So about those hangars...I broke two and fixed them with athletic tape, and haven't broken anymore, but it would still be nice to have a few more hangars.  Also my shoes smell really bad...I'm not sure why but do you know of any way to fix that?  And also if you could send me the vial and oil that I think I left in my room that would be great.  Another thing is an address book!  And if you can fill it out some too that would be great!  I got a dear Elder from MacKenzie, and it was good to hear from her!  But it bugged out and didn't give me her email, so I can't respond...And Amanda sent me some but I forgot to write her email down too...I think I know it though.  I love and miss you all so much!  I know that Heavenly Father is watching over us while we're apart!

The First Letter, 12 June 2013

Dear Family,

I made it!  The first day felt long, and it didn't even start until 1:30.  From 6:00 - 10:00 is gonna be hard.  Our whole lesson was only in Thai...I picked up a little but not a lot.  The guys in my district are way cool.  Ian's friend is in my district!  My companion is Elder Watkins, he's from Utah.  He's nice but sometimes the conversations feel forced.  Tomorrow will be the first real day.  We have to do our first mock discussion on Friday all in Thai.  It's going to be way hard.  They just called quiet time, so we have 15 minutes until lights out.  I've never gone to bed at 10:30 in my life, hopefully I'll be able to sleep.  Mom I'm probably going to need a few things but I'm not quite sure what yet.  I'll let you know. Oh and I learned from the other guys that we don't actually go to Laos or Myanmar, just Thailand.

It seems like there are a lot of missionaries going to Thailand.  Twenty two  got here today and more will probably come soon.  I hope you guys did good at your soccer games!  There's one other elder who plays soccer, so hopefully we can kick a ball around.  Our district leaders told us they like to play volleyball on P-days. It sounds like it'll be lots of fun.  The most spiritual thing today was sitting with a ton of new missionaries and doing a sort of discussion with what they said were real investigators.  It seems weird that they would have someone do that but I guess so.

I love and miss you all so much!  I don't think I'll see emails until next Wednesday.  I'm not sure how the mail works either.  But We'll figure it our soon.  Hopefully somehow we'll get letters or emails going soon!  I love and miss you all!

Love Elder Josh Keller
